The Hydrogen Economy

Speaker:
Jeremy Rifkin, Author and Economist
Event Date:
Monday, May 22, 2006 - 5:30pm - 8:30pm

We are in the early stages of an historic change in the way we organize the earth's energy.  The Industrial Age, which began with the carrying of coal from Newcastle several hundred years ago, is now winding down in the oil fields of the Middle East.  Our petro-geologists tell us that global production of oil is likely to peak as early as 2010 or as late as 2037.  Peak refers to the point at which half of the known reserves of cheap crude oil are used up.  Once that point is reached, prices will begin to rise dramatically and continue to do so as society moves down the b

Biofuels - Potential National Implications

Speaker:
Dr. Michael A. Pacheo, National Renewable Energy Lab
Suzanne Hunt, Worldwatch Institute
Event Date:
Monday, July 17, 2006 - 5:30pm - 8:30pm

Biomass derived from plants or animal waste is a renewable source of energy. Liquid biofuels for transportation such as biodiesel, methanol, or ethanol can be produced from biomass. Heat can be obtained by reprocessing organic waste. There are disputes concerning the potential for biomass to replace petroleum and other fossil fuels as a sustainable source of energy and also about the environmental impacts of energy from biomass.

Reduce Costs, Save Energy, Building Green: LEEDing the Way

Speaker:
Robert Fox, Partner, Cook & Fox Architects
Teresa Pohlman, Pentagon Reservation
Event Date:
Monday, March 19, 2007 - 5:30pm - 8:30pm

Commercial and residential buildings use 65.2% of total U.S. electricity and over 36% of total U.S. primary energy. Buildings use 40% of the raw materials globally and 12% of the potable water in the United States. Building activity in the U.S. also contributes over 136 million tons of construction and demolition waste (2.8 lbs/person/day), and 30% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.

Biofuels, At What Cost?

Speaker:
Glenn Prickett, Conservation International
Event Date:
Monday, January 14, 2008 - 6:57pm

Biofuel subsidies continue to change at a very fast rate and do little to constrain the enormous environmental issues that arise when so much land and water are used to produce fuel.
